SETT Review

I spent a day and a half at SETT this year. I went to the Edward de Bono keynote, a demo of Glow, the website for all Scottish schools and a talk on using a plasma screen. The rest of the time I toured the displays.

The plasma screen linked to a computer with a touchscreen overlay worked in a similar way to a whiteboard/dataprojector set up but without all the wires and no shadows. The lady talking about it worked in a nursery with it. It was set up in the entrance and could be used for displaying notices, photos and children's work for parents as well as being used by the pupils. It was on a height adjustable stand. It is more expensive than a whiteboard/data projector combination but price seems to be coming down.

LogoLab
a software product, which offers teachers the ability to put all of their text worksheets, photographs, video clips, maps, power point presentations, audio files etc into one managed library facility. These items can then be distributed down to individual pupils, groups of pupils or whole classes for self study across the school network. Saved work is available for assessment through a content and class management system and an inbuilt messaging service allows student mentoring and support. New audio files such as pupils reading poetry or Mother tongue resources for EAL students can be created and added through the virtual recording facility. School videos can also be easily added.

It is fairly unique but becomes more so when you realise that it also has video captioning, segmenting and subtitling facilities built in and a full set of language laboratory voice recording and video control tools.

This ability to offer schools language laboratory facilities whilst bringing easy to operate multimedia facilities into any subject from RE to Physics makes LogoLAB more than worth a view.
